I make a lot of DVDs. I make them for weddings for family and for funerals and memorials. I make trip DVDs and memory DVDs and all sorts of stuff.
Why don't you put all that stuff online, Scott? Why don't you put it on Facebook/YouTube/Vimeo/Whatever? There's a couple reasons. First, believe it or not, there's a lot of people in the world who don't have high-speed internet. We've got lots of relatives overseas who don't have a laptop at home nor do they have any internet in their home. Here in the US we've got lots of older relatives who don't have computers, or perhaps they only have an iPad and a link to a YouTube video doesn't have the sense of meaning or permanence that a DVD does.
Random Aside: It's a shame that today's young people won't realize how much effort it took to create a mix tape for someone. Rearranging MP3s and emailing a list isn't the same as waiting for specific songs to get played on the radio and pressing Record within the first two notes.
Perhaps making DVDs is a lost art and I'm an old fogey. Or perhaps DVDs are today's mix tapes.
Regardless, I recently installed Windows 8 on my home machines and my laptop. Around the same time my Uncle Ronald - the closet person I've ever had to a grandfather - passed away. I immediately got to work creating a DVD for his memorial service. I had 30 minutes of audio of Uncle Ronnie that I recorded for a never-aired podcast. I had hundreds of photos over 90+ years of his life, 8mm and Super8 film reels as far back as the 50s, combined with digital video going all the way back to 1998 from my own collection. I was looking forward to burning many DVD copies and mailing it to interested relatives as well as playing the DVD at the memorial.
I spent many hours putting together a tribute video. I used Movie Maker as I have for many of my projects. I also have Adobe Premiere but for putting together family videos there's little easier than Movie Maker. I did my editing and went to Save Movie to export my movie as a WMV to import into Windows DVD Maker. But there was no DVD option. Confused, I searched the start menu for Windows DVD Maker. I'd used it just a week before...before I upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 8.
Windows DVD Maker was gone. It's not in Windows 8. :(
I was pretty bummed as I needed to make DVDs for the memorial event and I kind of needed them immediately. There's lots of different third party DVD creation software packages but I've always personally felt that media players and media creation software from 3rd parties (Roxio, CyberLink, etc) have always been rather garish in their user interface style. They never LOOK like they belong in Windows. There's always bright red window chrome, the same airbrushed happy clipart families in splash screens.
I just want to import a video file into a simple app and create a DVD. Preferably for free.
I evaluated a number of DVD creation suites over a number of hours and decided on the open source DVDStyler (NOTE: this is a link to the Adware-Free Portable Edition!). I like DVDStyler because it's extremely spartan in its user interface but extremely capable. One could believe it was included with Windows and it is an excellent complement to Windows Live Movie Maker. For me, installing DVDStyler makes up for DVD Maker being gone on Windows 8.
IMPORTANT NOTE/WARNING: While it is an open source GPL'ed project, in order to support itself DVDStyler does install some toolbar software and will change your browser home page and install additional software if you just "next, next, next, finish" through their installation process. When installing free software please ALWAYS be aware of what you're saying YES to. Be sure to use the Custom installation option and select (or deselect) the options that are right for you. While I found these changes surprising and an annoyance, I feel the value provided by this free software to be worth the annoyance of these other applets. I removed them later via Uninstall Programs as well as by manually removing extensions in Firefox and IE.
When you save your movie from Windows Live Movie maker, you might want to make a Custom Production Setting. I created one and called it DVD and set it to 720x480. You might change this if you are creating PAL (720x576) or NTSC DVDs. It's up to you. The point is that Windows Live Movie Maker has no standard DVD movie creation option anymore but you can create any custom setting you'd like.
In DVDStyler I use similar settings. Be sure to select 16x9 if most of your source material is widescreen and most of your destination TVs are also widescreen. I usually use DVD-5 (4.7 gigabytes) but occasionally I'll use a dual-layer DVD-9 (8.5 gigabytes) and a high bitrate if there is a lot of action on the screen.
You can burn the DVD directly or, if you want more control, create an ISO file and use another tool like ImgBurn to burn or create multiple copies.
I'm glad to have found a reasonable, simple and free option for creating DVDs on Window 8 in DVDStyler.

Why not just install Win7 in a VM and run DVD Maker from there?

Scott: A hassle? Probably. But is the license really an issue? Don't you have an MSDN subscription?
Hey Scott, I recall that the DVD related functionality was only going to be available with the Media Center addon to Windows 8 Pro. Do you have the Media Center addon? Just curious if the DVD maker was included with that.
If DVDStyler fails with " Application provided invalid, non monotonically increasing dts to muxer in stream " then follow the advices of ryahoo in the sourceforge forum.

I don't understand what you could possibly have against Windows 8. It doesn't include the DVD Maker, because either it was rendered unnecessary or due to playback issues. (Like with Media Center).
I'm pretty happy with Windows 8. At first, it was hard to get by without the start menu, but you grow accustomed to it.

@Bart: No DVD-Maker isn't back, after you upgraded Win 8 with WMC. And also DVD maker won't run (due to a missing MPEG-2 encoder) if you still have a Win 7 machine within your network and tries to invoke DVD maker over network.
Here's another fine mess... Even if you still have Windows 7... if you update to Windows Movie Maker 2012 it starts saving your movies by default as MP4 instead of WMV... so you can't use Windows DVD Maker anymore since it doesn't recognize your Movie Maker files. LAME. This is probably why they are getting rid of DVD Maker since they are abandoning WMV and didn't want to fix it. You can force the new Movie Maker to save in the old WMV format, but you have to doink around in the settings.
I'm in the same boat as you. 64 kindergarten children. Hundreds of photos and short clips, one day to assemble, cut, prune and preen into a 3.30 clip for each class,using Movie maker instead of my Premiere for simplicity this day, brand new Windows 8,no intention of using their apps as I'm app..le all the way and kaBOOM!

You promote this kind of rubbish software? You getting a kick-back from trying to install "crap-ware"? I just used it to create a DVD and it wouldn't play, even on a PS3.

I thought it best to leave them at the maximum so I put them to 28,850kbps video and 192 for the audio because 28,850 is the bitrate of the DV-AVI files I stripped from my camera and 192 was the highest audio it allowed. Do you know if it makes a difference?
Next I'm going to either transfer the MP4 I saved from WLMM back onto a computer with Windows 7 to or download the software you recommended or install and old package I have called DVD Movie Factory to burn it to DVD.

I am completely and utterly dismayed that DVD maker is gone from my brand spankin' new laptop that came with 8. I can't figure anything out. At least now I can quit trying to find BURN DVD somewhere. I have a presentation finished....hot off the press tonight, and now what. They won't believe that I "couldn't burn a dvd". Great. Thanks for the heads up.
Scott, I loaded the dvdstyle software but when I try to burn a DVD with a video from Movie Maker it gives me an error stating "no VOBUs found". I have been able to burn a video directly imported from the video camera but not a video that has been modified with Movie Maker. I am new at this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

DVDStyler for some reason didn't make DVDs compatible with my dvd player in my living room...not sure why, ended up using dvd flick (dated a litte) but it at least worked.
When I attempt to burn a DVD it won't allow me to access the real DVD drive only a virtual drive to burn the movie? Any suggestions?

Others have said dvd making may have been rendered unnecessary or maybe a cost cutting measure. If either is true they should have given up-front notice to those upgrading. In my case my laptop was ruined thanks to my shaky hands and a hot cup of coffee. I had to buy a new system. After finding the right laptop for my needs I was "stuck" with windows 8. Stuck because they made it impossible to downgrade on new computers. I actually enjoy 8 after having spent hours figuring out how to navigate it. I know they can't notify you of every detail and I know they expect us to be informed before making these decisions. I feel misled because I was informed that aside from the new layout and a few added features this was going to, at the base, be the same as windows 7. I'm kicking myself for not reading deeper. these are programs that we have become accustomed to as windows users and something I feel as an important staple in many people lives. I just spent $700 on a new laptop only to find out that in order to use the features I paid for I have to spend even more for the programs..... seems like a money suck to me. It's a shame how intangible our world is becoming.
Like Marsa and Darv, I can't burn from this software. It just asks me where to store the virtual copy. Not useful.
I too find windows 8 on my new laptop frustrating for these same reasons.. can't view old video files and copy dvd's. There are people that still use camcorders and copy to our laptops and burn family copies of DVD's. I too find it very frustrating that I am having do deal with this in windows 8.
Beaware, that DVDStyler comes with a TON of bloatware, possibly malware, just spent the last half hour uninstalling everything and switching my default search back from DeltaSearch!

Alan, Tami and Juliette - You create a movie file (like a WMV) from DVD Maker, then within DVD Styler you select that WMV as your source movie. You can then burn directly from DVD Styler.
Well, Ive spent many hours creating dvd using DVDStyler, and I cant play them all in any DVD players.. Cant even select the option "play, chapters, etc" in the menu, any solution?

Tried DVDstyler, unticked the toolbar options, double checked I had unticked them. Guess what? It still installed them anyway. So then I spent ages removing toolbars, default homepages and default searches from my various browsers, and uninstalling 4 programs. One installer failed to work so spent ages mucking about clearing the crapwear out. After all that I used DVDStyler and it gave me a DVD with a menu page but nothing behind it would play on my PC or DVD player. Utter waste of time for me :( Ended up finding a Windows 7 PC to borrow.
You can actually burn a DVD/CD right off the Windows Media Player. Just switch to lib view. I know, the 'player' in it's name turn most of people to look elsewhere.

Chris, Windows Media Player can only burn data DVD, not DVD-video. So that does not help. What he wanted was a DVD-video that could run on a stand alone DVD-player.
I am trying now to burn my first DVD witn DVDStyler, but it seems to be very slow. Hope it will work though.

Firing up Windows 7 in a virtual machine and running DVD Maker in that worked a treat! Thanks VMWare Workstation :-).
Worth looking into: dual boot your pc with linux and use openshot movie editor and DeVeDe for burning.
It seems microsoft makes every other os worth using. good thing 7 has support until 2020.

I just upgraded to Windows 8 and went to use DVD Maker and was NOT happy to see that the program itself was gone. Then to research and find that it will not work for Windows 8! I am SO mad that they took that program away! It is the best program for burning/making DVDs that I have seen in a LONG time! It was simple and easy and just great! Sigh....
I am downloading this DVD Styler now. I HOPE that it does all you say it does. (I don't know you, but it seems you know what you're talking about!) :)

Either one will work. I used the 2.4.3 myself. Be sure to carefully watch the installer as the app can install some toolbars and crap if you aren't paying attention.

Thank you for taking time to refer others, me, to a free solution in DVDStyler, for the lack of DVD Maker in Windows 8. I just downloaded DVDStyler via Softonic and expect to try it this evening after using Wondershare DVD Creator for about the past 3 months on trial. It's a great product on trial and worth the $60 price but I have not parted with the price yet like many others addicted to good free software.
Question: If I may I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop which I just got in February with Win 8. DVD creation via the hardware is limited to DVD + and - RW which is fine however I have a curiosity and some unused + and - R disks. Is there a driver or anything which will allow use of + or - R disks for DVD creation by this type hardware? Maybe the software also controls this use of + or - RW only.

I used the dvd styler and am only having one problem! All my dvd,s are coming out half screen,what can I do to make them full screen? I have tried changing to 4:3 but still keep getting a half screen????

I don't know why they would remove DVD maker....what's moviemaker without it? I'd move to another is but I've tried using a mac and the "user interface" in English, how easy it is for a human to use the freaking thing...sucked. Not to mention the battery life....pleh. I ended up just going back to Windows 7. The new computer came with 8, old one had 7, so we just frankensteined them together until we ended up with all the features we wanted on one machine. And yes, "frankensteined" is a totally awesome technical term meant to confuse and awe the Gen pop. =D
you should use the simple "copy" feature under preferences instead of trying to match dvdstyler format to your created movie maker format. It is faster and less confusing. An example would be ac3 for audio and "copy" instead of the typical 720x480. Although if you have already created a 720X480 profile in movie maker and saved using that profile, then it wont be an issue. Regardless it is always easier to "copy" from dvdstyler. Less hiccups.
In Windows 8, on the start screen, right click. Select "Show All Apps" and there is Movie Maker listed in the apps.
You failed to Mention that a Movie Maker file will not be able to work in this software. I have tried all options and I can NOT get my windows movie maker file into DVDSTYLER..... And I converted it from a MOD file to AVI and it still does not work!!!!! I bet you can not answer that ???
Nathan - As I mention in the post, create a setting in Movie Maker to create a "WMV." Then save your Movie Maker movie as a WMV, then import.

I was trying to burn some pics and video to a dvd. I'd made my dvd in photoshop premiere elements 9 but was having a hard time making it burn, plus I couldn't add all the pictures I wanted also. After browsing this link I saw someone put a link to microsoft and it said to put the windows media player in the search bar in apps. I have windows 8 and am not impressed btw. Anyhow I brought it up and was able to drag my video and my hundreds of pictures on and burn a data dvd. It worked great, I was able to play it back and scroll thru all the pictures. I then burned 6 more identical dvd's as it kept my list in the burn tab. I had no idea windows media player was on the computer- it doesn't show up, so maybe there are others out there that have it but don't realize it.
Scott, I managed to actually get a DVD to burn using the DVD styler. I bought Roxio (thumbs down); Nero (TD); IMGBurn (TD). However, my happiness soon faded as I tried to play it in the DVD player (Sony) and I got a msg: 'playback prohibited by area limitations'. Don't know what that means. Unless.... the size of the file is not compatible? Have you ever seen this msg? I am so tired of trying to find a decent software.
Back to my issue earlier, I now can burn and play a DVD with styler. I created the video in Movie Maker as a WMV but I have to convert it to AVI in order for it to play. THe movie is OK but the music is messed up. It's fine as wmv no skips pauses, etc. I choose AC3 as the audio format. If my original music is MP3, does that matter?
The software tries to trick you into installing other adware like Conduit Search. Pretty much hijacked my Browsers and had to manually clean the registry and remove the files. I did my best to avoid saying yes to anything when I installed. I think their current installer may have changed. Not a bad product though. Thanks.

Freemake video converter software, a free download, worked to convert my Windows Live Movie Maker project, made with Windows 8, to DVD. Freemake did not install any nasty toolbars, etc on my system.

It's this kind of sneaky attempt to install malware that is sadly becoming more common among so called 'open source software'. The people who do this are acting against the interests of FOSS and the GPL should explicitly forbid these tactics and name and shame devs who are, quite simply, malware distributors.

I made a movie using Movie Maker. Then discovered no way to burn it to DVD. Read your article and downloaded DVD styler. It won't open the movie I made because it isn't recognizing the file extension. DVD styler is looking only for .xml and .dvds. Movie maker only saves in .wlmp. What do I do now?

Having the same problem as some others here; I can burn it just fine, but I can't play it in my DVD player. The menu shows up, but it doesn't respond to any button clicks. Any ideas?

I downloaded this software yesterday and ended up with a Trojan - FYI to all of you that are reading this - DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS SOFTWARE - it now comes with free MALWARE. Just an FYI to anyone who does not want a virus on their computer. What the heck is wrong with people?
Does this software also allow to make copies of dvd's you already have?

Scott, I owe you my life right now...I made a DVD photomotion for my sons football team and couldn't get it to burn on my new windows 8 computer...it took me hours with no luck. I found your site and with in minutes I was burning away...Thank you so much for the info. Super easy to do once you download the program :)

I've heard that Microsoft has to pay for the codecs required to run DVD maker.
