Found Video: Social Networking for Developers and Making Your Blog Suck Less

I was putting together a list of resources for a friend on how to start in programming, and the importance of Social Networking and having an online presence for Developers. I did a talk a while back and there was really bad guerilla video taken. However, in my searching I discovered video of me (scandalous!) at a Microsoft website called Thrive. I had completely forgotten that this talk was recorded. Of course, as it's older, it may be dated in some ways.

The video player on that site is too small, so I've embedded it here and made it big. Also, I've viewed-source and here's links to downloadable video files of both. This video was taken at Devscovery last year, as I recall and the audience was hardcore developers.

Wow - tons of great content here. This whole issue of "managing your brand" in todays age is a necessity as you make your way through your career. I've said it many times that as I'm going through a stack of resumes: A) I will google the person before initiating contact with them and B) if someone has a link to their blog/whatever from their resume, I stop what I'm doing. That blog will tell me way, way, way, way more than a resume ever will. It tells me how inquisitive they are, it tells me how technical they are, and how well they communicate an idea. Thanks for writing this stuff down, I couldn't agree more with this. Devs needs to "make an effort" to manage their brand, but there hasn't really been any real direction or leadership on this up until now. Nice work! -Rob

Scott - you are the first speaker that I have seen eating druing presentation.
Make your presentation suck less- dont eat during speaking ;-)

@Hannes not necessarily :) I personally don't care if people eat or drink during presentations - makes them less formal, we all hate formal.

Good stuff Scott. One thing you could do to make video, presentations more accessible or just make your blog look cooler is make a myBrainshark. I use it to put voice on my powerpoints and then embed them into my blog or facebook or whatever. Cool tool, might be really useful for you. Here's their site:

Cool Video. I have started my blog long, and just these tips were very essential for anyone.

Ya, they moved these. I'm working on getting the raw WMVs and putting them on Channel 9 myself.

This was a great set of videos to watch, oddly enough the volume was too low and was hard to hear (probably only for me), but I really liked a lot of what you're saying. I have been blogging for a while, I get a few hits here and there, but I really don't mind, I had to laugh cause you said something to the effect of "I am posting this here for me, so I don't lose it", that is honestly about 90% of why I started my blog, there were a lot of little things I got tired of searching for all the pieces for, and caught my self doing it over and over, now I can just search my blog for stuff....and have numerous times...Thanks again
