The Art of Speaking with Scott HanselmanIt all started in high school with Musical Theatre. Then it continued when I was teaching as an Adjunct Professor at a State University. I like talking to people. Now I've been doing it for 20 years (25 if you count "My Fair Lady").

While I've had an opportunity to share some tips and tricks for speaking over the years on my blog, I've never really felt the information was organized. I've presented on presenting, but never assembled courseware. I've written many posts on the subject, but never created an e-book. The information is here and there, but not well, ahem, presented.

Then Rob Conery came to me with the idea of a polished 1 hour video where he asks me to speak on an unfamiliar topic, I research and build the talk, then present on the spot. All filmed, all real, all legit. It was too good an idea to pass up. Complete with interviews, examples, demos, how I design story arc, my thought process - applied.

We did it.

I'm sincerely thrilled to share the results with you today. A lot of hard work late at night, hours of thought, more hours of editing, and a little TekPub magic later and we can happily bring you my first TekPub video (UPDATE: Now Pluralsight) "The Art of Speaking - with Scott Hanselman."

Perhaps you've given technical speeches at work and are considering a local user group. Maybe you've spoken at code camps and want to go national or international. Or, perhaps you'd just like to be more comfortable talking to the folks at your office and presenting to the boss.

It's included with your TekPub annual or monthly subscription or you can just buy the one video. It's packed with information and it's got that polish that TekPub is known for. Rob and I feel that this one hour documentary style video is a great introduction into the minds of a technical speaker with not only experience, but passion for the topic.

I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.

I saw that and I thought, "Is Scott Hanselman so difficult to talk to that we need lessons on how to speak with him?"

:)
December 09, 2011 23:26
So was the doublespeak in the title of the video intentional? ;)
December 09, 2011 23:27
Just a little fun.
December 09, 2011 23:52
Yeah, are you really that difficult to talk to that we need a lesson in it?

Straight up and act right!

Hi Scott, I'm new to TekPub - Is this the first of a series of videos for $18 or is it just the 1 hour?

Clearly a few of people beat me to the punch about the double entendre, but it still certainly is VERY worthy of my acknowledgement. Entertaining as always... Thanks! :)

Whats next? Rob is asking you to do a video because you click the left mouse button great? The art of clicking?

Whoa. Tough crowd.

My newest t-shirt: "Damn you, Jimmy Wales!"

Rich - You can either buy one (which is a decent deal) or get a monthly subcription for a few dollars more and then you get access to dozens of videos. That's the real deal.

YouTube mirror?

Chris Jenkin - Huh?
December 10, 2011 5:04
Benjamin - Is that a request? ;) No, this is a 90 minute talk on how to give effective Technical Presentations. It's not JUST clicking, although there is some of that.

Awesome, just bought a copy. I have watched a bunch of your presentations over the years, even though I've never been involved in any projects that use the Microsoft stack. Your presentations are always fun and I can always learn something new.

Just saw this and i liked it a lot, good job.
Something i noticed was that in the beginning you talked about not having your hand in your pockets and not touching your face. You managed to do this in like 30 seconds of the presentation ;)

Great stuff, just subscribed after 12 months away to watch this.

Hey, I did "My Fair Lady" in high school too! I was Doolittle. Definitely a good background for my career in high tech.

This will be [one of] my Christmas presents I buy for myself. Scott, I'm always inspired by your demos and speeches. I think they are hilarious, every time I watch one (or had the glorious opportunity to see you in person) it's like I went to a comedy show but learned something in the process.

@Chris Jenkin: Go on I'll take the bait.

I've just bought this video to see if I fancy a TekPub subscription. I thought I was quite good at presenting by just watching other people and doing the odd one myself. Scott prepares it excellently and shows us how to cope when circumstances (or a man living in Hawaii) thow curveballs at you. Don't think that's worth $18? Don't watch it!

I need to know the name of the soundtrack playing in the background with the guy who intermittently blurts "he is good when he does it".

But yeah, great TekPub vid :)

December 19, 2011 8:18
Well this is frustrating ): I'm a poor student and I can't afford 15€ videos ): Louis CK produced a high-budget comedy show for which he used many months of work, and the video (DRM free) costs $5. is $18 is overpriced as hell! ):
December 23, 2011 3:35
You said not to put hands inside a pocket, but in your presentation you have your left hand inside your pockets. Just curious why?
December 23, 2011 4:02
It's hard to take one's own advice! I did remove the keys though. The point is not to jingle things in your pocket like change or keys.
December 25, 2011 9:00
I see you check your timer frequently, is there any tip on that action ?
I'm curious about it. Thanks !

Oh men! just becouse of this post I've gifted an anual subscription of tekpub for my xmas present! Great stuff over there, I can't believe I didn't know it!

Hi Scott!

You know I'm not a developer. But I have heard you speak (at BlogWorld '10) and got a LOT from your presentation there. Knowing you, and having had that experience, I took a risk and spent my time and money to watch this.

It was well worth the money and even a better use of my time! I wanted you to know that there is a lot of value in this even for non-techy folks like me. Thank you for letting us inside your mind for a while! I got a lot out of it!
